The fisher & paykel washing machine motor has been used successfully as a HAWT for a number of years and the best resource for infomation in my opnion has to be The Backshed where Glenn has done a great job describing in detail how to turn a humble washing machine motor into a wind turbine.
Although the F&P motor makes for a good HAWT it does have some problems namely the body of the motor is made from plastic, the motor does suffer from cogging and a speed of around 280 rpm is needed for the cut in before any charging can take place. The motors come in various sizes and are named after the wire thickness used ie: 0.6mm is a 60 series, 0.8mm is a 80 series and 1.0mm is a 100 series.
