The Wind Page

This section will describe the different types of wind turbines from the DIY perspective. Commercial Wind Turbines can run into thousands of dollars yet with some thought and skill depending on the voltage of your array a Dual Axial Flux Wind turbine can output upto 6 Kw's on a 48 volt array, on 24 volts around 2Kw is about the maximum. Also the Fisher & Paykel washing machine motor can easily be made into a wind turbine. The above 2 DIY turbines are covered in the HAWT section.

VAWTS ( Vertical Axis wind Turbines) are a total different animal to the HAWTS and most people will say they are a waste of time and resources making them. However, it's all part of the fun making your own R.E. devices.

My current project is turning a 4kw 3 phase motor into a wind generator for my house array. The goal is to start charging at 150 rpm which should be enough wind speed to keeping the blades going when it cuts in.
